Lit Only By Fire
Metalworking Workshops Metalworking is another of those ancient skills whose beginning is lost in the sheer length of time it has been going on. In fact, it seems to a degree, that even after the discovery of metalwork, stone tools were still used extensively until metal became ubiquitous and inexpensive. This would indicate that man has had a knowledge of working with metal since long before the "Copper Age". Metal is a tremendously useful substance, and the key to its shaping, molding and casting was long held secret by guilds and craftsmen. ﷯ Here, we will teach you how to mold and fashion it with no secrets held back. We have been working with metal here on Lit Only by Fire's property for many years. We offer basic black-smithing all the way up to sand and lost wax casting of molten metal.
Current Workshop Offerings The Blacksmith's Forge (Beginner level) - $150 July 21: 8:30am - 4:00pm One day of coal fire and orange glowing steel! This course will introduce you to the forge. heating metal is simple, but know how hot to get in and when to hit it and where is the key that our blacksmith will share with you. Build something that will be your memento of your first time toking the fire! Advanced blacksmithing (Intermediate level) - $150 Our beginning level course is recommended first if you have no experience with a forge. July 22, 2018: 8:30am - 4:00pm Once you can mold the metal, it is time to learn to make it do what you want. Forge welding, proper fluxing and heat treating are covered in this one day course. Molten Metal and the lost Styrofoam method (Intermediate - Advanced level) - $400 October 6-7, 2018: 8:30am - 5:00pm Ages 16 & Up Only Melting and casting metal is both dangerous and exceedingly rewarding if done safely and properly. This course will entail making a model from Styrofoam, producing a sand mold from it and pouring it with molten aluminum to reproduce the Styrofoam model in solid aluminum. Sand Casting (Intermediate - Advanced level) - $600 October 12-15, 2018: 8:30am - 4:00pm Molten Metal and the lost styrofoam method is recommended before this course Ages 16 & Up Only Once you have the basics of pouring molten metal, we will begin to work with sand casting using a sodium silicate based sand which is curable and moving up to metals with a higher melting point. Although we will still be using the coal forge, we will now be melting brass in it and properly constructing a sand casting mold. The Lost art of Lost Wax (Advanced level) - $600 Nov. 3-4,10-11,17-18, Dec. 1-2 , 2018: 8:30am - 1:00pm Ages 21 & Up Only Once you have a bit of casting under your belt, it is time to tackle the notoriously difficult lost wax, or investment cast. The cast is hard primarily because a properly constructed, preheated mold makes this cast troublesome, dangerous and portentially very frustrating. Our expert will help you along in constructing you master, making your wax copy and finally pouring a mold. This is restricted to ages 21 and up due to the fact that a DC Electric Arc Furnace will be utilized and we will be pouring molten steel at over 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit .
